After ordering laying hens in May, they finally arrived today! We are now happy to have a dozen large, brown chickens living in our little red and white barn. We can’t wait to have our own large, brown eggs to serve at breakfast!

If you are planning to attend the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, be sure to treat yourself to a few days on Salt Spring. If you book now, you can come here for some rest and relaxation before or after the events. A float plane can take you from downtown Vancouver or from the international airport in 25 minutes! It’s a gorgeous flight over the Gulf Islands. We can pick you up in Ganges Harbour for the 3 minute drive to our peaceful B & B. The lavender won’t be in bloom but there’s lots of hiking, sightseeing and reading to be done!
Summer is flying by on Salt Spring! I can’t believe it’s mid August already. I love these hot summer days and often go swimming in St Mary’s Lake or at Vesuvius.
We are selling our fresh cut lavender as well as sachets. And we’ve started our apple harvest. I also just picked the first juicy blackberries to serve with homemade yogurt at breakfast.
We are enjoying hot summer days on Salt Spring. Luckily the rooms are staying quite cool with cross ventilation and some fans. We had a most amazing sunset a few nights ago.
Canadian authors Andrea Spalding www.andreaspalding.com and David Spalding stayed with us last week. They enjoyed visiting bookstores on the island as well as in Sydney. Andrea signed copies of her books at Fables Cottage.

Book Mark, our reading bear, wishes everyone a happy Canada Day! We will be singing Oh Canada and eating birthday cake in Centennial Park, watching the sky divers and watching the fireworks from a friend’s boat in Ganges Harbour. Have fun and be safe!
We’ve hosted guests from England, Toronto, Australia and Thailand during the past few days. They enjoyed breakfast on the deck and exploring Salt Spring during the day. Hannah and I added new supplies of books to our shelves, including John Grisham titles, travel books and relaxing holiday titles by Maeve Binchy.
After a few drops of rainduring the night, the grass is green and the lavender is starting to come into bloom. This hummingbird visits our feeders, together with many friends and relatives, every day.
Today we received an email from a guest who stayed with us for three days last week.
Vick from Ottawa writes:
“Fantastic place!!!!
Five star accommodations at a very economical price.
The hosts, Margriet and Kees, are wonderful and the breakfast is fantastic.
I highly recommend staying here, for your Salt Spring holiday.”
Nothing but blue skies and gorgeous sunshine this week! We’ve seen records for high temps on these dates. But we are not complaining. Our visitors this week came by ferry: on foot and by bicycle and are all enjoying these hot summer days. The deer, however, tend to stay in the shade.
We still have one room available for this Thursday and Friday night.
